WD-40 was founded in 1953 as Rocket Chemical Company, which initially focused on the research and development of metal protection products for the aerospace industry. Its iconic product WD-40 (full name "Water Displacement, 40th formula") was named after the success of the 40th formula test and was used in the early days for rust prevention and cleaning of Atlas missiles. In 1969, the company was renamed WD-40 Company and listed on NASDAQ in 1973 (stock code: WDFC).
