- Thermal overload relays are three-pole relays with bimetallic strip elements (1 per pole). The motor current flows through the bimetallic strip elements and heats them directly and indirectly. If overloaded (overcurrent), the bimetallic elements will bend due to heating. This causes the release of the relay and a change in the position of the contact switches (95-96/97-98). Contacts 95-96 are used to control the load contactor.
- Overload relays have a setting scale in amperes, allowing direct adjustment of the relay without any additional calculations. According to international and national standards, the rated current is the rated current of the motor, not the tripping current (no tripping at 1.05 x Ir; tripping at 1.2 x Ir; Ir = rated current). The construction of the relay shall ensure that it can protect itself in case of overload. Overload relays must prevent short circuits. The table shows the appropriate short-circuit protection devices.
