Series Overview

Series Overview

3RU11 - Current Up to 100A
  • The rated current of the 3RU11 thermal overload relay can reach 100A. It is designed to provide current - related protection for electrical equipment with general starting conditions to prevent its temperature rise from exceeding the allowable value due to overload or phase failure. Overload or phase failure will cause the current of the motor to rise above the set rated current value. The increase in current heats the bimetallic strip inside the overload relay through the heating element. After the latter bends, it operates a pair of auxiliary contacts through a tripping mechanism. This auxiliary contact can then disconnect the load through a contactor. The disconnection time depends on the ratio of the tripping current to the rated working current /e, and has a long - term stable tripping characteristic curve. The “tripped” state is indicated by a transparent position indicator.
  • After a certain recovery time, the relay can be reset manually or automatically.
The 3RU11 thermal overload relay has been optimized electrically and mechanically specifically for the 3RT1 contactor. In addition to being installed independently, it can also be directly plugged into the contactor to save space.
The main and auxiliary circuits can be wired in multiple ways, including using fork - shaped terminal studs. After the overload relay is connected, its operation can be tested through a test to check if it is normal. In addition to the test function, the 3RU11 thermal overload relay also has a stop function.
  • The 3RU11 thermal overload relay has a wide range of applications. Please refer to the following sections “Applications”, “Environmental Conditions”, “Overload Relays for Star - Delta Combinations” and “Use with Frequency Converters” for details. The 3RU11 thermal overload relay only provides overload and phase - failure protection. Users still need to use fuses or circuit breakers for short - circuit protection.
Applications
  • The 3RU11 thermal overload relay is suitable for protecting three - phase and single - phase AC and DC motors.
  • If single - phase AC or DC loads are to be protected by the 3RU11 thermal overload relay, all three - phase bimetallic strips must be heated. Therefore, all main circuits of the relay must be connected in series.
Overload Relays for Star - Delta Starter Combinations
  • When using an overload relay in a star - delta combination, attention must be paid that only 1/U of the inrush current flows through the main contactor. The overload relay installed on the main contactor must be set to 0.58 times the motor current.
If the load in star operation is to be optimally protected, a second overload relay must be installed on the star contactor. The star current is 1/3 of the rated motor current. The setting value of the relevant relay must be based on this current.
  • The Siemens 3RU11 thermal overload relay suitable for 3RA star - delta starters is listed in the “Load - feeder Switchgear - Contactors and Contactor Combinations” section.
Control Circuit
  • The 3RU11 thermal overload relay does not require an additional power supply.
Short - Circuit Protection
  • For short - circuit protection, fuses or circuit breakers must be used. The corresponding short - circuit protection devices for 3RU11 thermal overload relays connected to/not connected to contactors are listed in “Technical Data” or “Selection and Order Data”.
